Causes of Eye Twitching / Blepharospasm
Eye twitching can occur due to no known cause and this is also medically called Essential blepharospasm. Sometimes it maybe triggered or be prolonged by alcohol, drugs, lack of sleep, stress, smoking, fatigue or irritation within the eye.
When it occurs and persists or becomes chronic it may sometimes indicate the onset of other movement disorders.
Secondary blepharospasm may result from a variety of conditions that involve the brain and nerves including:
- Brain lesions
- Encephalitis
- Parkinsonism
- Tourette syndrome
- Bell's palsy
- Wilson's disease
- Neuroleptic drugs
- Rarely there may be a genetic link to the condition.
