Why is Tofacitinib Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an enzyme inhibitor, prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) either alone or with other medications. It blocks certain substances in the body that cause inflammation.

When should Tofacitinib not to be taken? (Contraindications)

It should not be co-administered with DMARDs.

What is the dosage of Tofacitinib?

Adult - PO - The recommended dose is 5mg two times per day.

How should Tofacitinib be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, as directed by your physician.

What are the warnings and precautions for Tofacitinib?

* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of hepatitis B or C, severe liver problems, serious infections, who are taking other medications, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* Patient may develop with increased risk of lymphoma, liver impairment and other cancers.
* Monitor complete blood counts, liver enzyme and lipid levels regularly while taking this medication.
* Avoid live vaccination while taking this medication.

What are the side effects of Tofacitinib?

Most Common Upper respiratory tract infections, headache, hypertension, diarrhea and nasopharyngitis.
Blood - Anemia.
Metabolic - Dehydration.
Central Nervous System - Tingling and sleeplessness.
Respiratory - Difficulty in breathing, cough, sinus congestion.
Gastrointestinal - Abdominal pain, indigestion, vomiting, stomach inflammation, nausea.
Liver - Fatty liver.
Skin - Rash, redness and itching.
Musculoskeletal - Muscle and joint pain, joint swelling.
General - Fever, fatigue, swelling in the extremities.
