Why is Lurasidone Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an atypical antipsychotic, prescribed for schizophrenia. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.

When should Lurasidone not to be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients who are taking carbamazepine, clarithromycin, efavirenz, certain HIV protease inhibitors, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazodone, nevirapine, phenobarbital, primidone, St. John's wort, telithromycin, or voriconazole, and known hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Lurasidone?

PO- The recommended starting dose is 40 mg once daily.

How should Lurasidone be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with a meal (at least 350 calories) once a day.

What are the warnings and precautions for Lurasidone?

* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of Alzheimer disease, dementia, Parkinson disease, trouble in swallowing, cancer, dehydration, alcoholism, heart, kidney, or liver impairment, seizures, high or low blood pressure, high cholesterol, high or low blood pressure, any allergy, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.
* Avoid alcohol consumption.
* It may raise blood sugar level; monitor sugar level regularly.
* Patient may develop with mental or mood changes; watch them carefully.

What are the side effects of Lurasidone?

Most Common - Drowsiness, unpleasant sensations, nausea, parkinsonism and agitation.
Gastrointestinal - Nausea, vomiting, indigestion and increased salivation.
General - Fatigue.
Musculoskeletal - Back pain.
Central Nervous System - Dizziness, sleeplessness, anxiety, and restlessness.
