Why is Ixabepilone Prescribed? (Indications)


This medication is prescribed for breast cancer either alone or in combination with capecitabine. It is a microtubule inhibitor. It kills cancer cells.

When should Ixabepilone not to be taken? (Contraindications)


Contraindicated in patients with increased level of liver enzymes, low white blood cell or platelet levels, and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Ixabepilone?


The recommended dose in 40mg/m2 given as an intravenous infusion over 3 hours. It can be repeated after 3 weeks. The dosage may be altered depending on the patient's body surface area, other diseases or medications that the patient takes.

How should Ixabepilone be taken?


It comes as a solution for injection, to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein. It is usually given once every 3 weeks.

What are the warnings and precautions for Ixabepilone?

*Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while using this medication.
*It may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
*Monitor complete blood counts and liver function, may be performed while taking this medication.
*Caution needed for patients with history of diabetes; any condition that causes numbness, burning or tingling in your hands or feet; or heart disease.

What are the side effects of Ixabepilone?

Central Nervous System- Confusion, difficulty in sleeping, dizziness and headache.
Gastrointestinal- Vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain.
Skin- Hair loss, numbness or burning, hives and rash.
Miscellaneous- Weight loss, watery eyes, difficulty tasting food, tiredness, faintness, chills, cough, sudden swelling and chest pain.

What are the other precautions for Ixabepilone?

* While taking this medication, use effective contraceptives to avoid pregnancy
