Polio Cases In The Country

As of 17th April 2007, total cases of Polio reported globally are 111 out of which 31 cases are from India and 54 are from Nigeria. The number of polio cases reported during the last three years, State wise can be seen at Annexure-I.

To control the circulation of wild polio virus following action are being taken:

» Two full NID rounds implemented in January and February 2007

» One SNID implemented in UP, Bihar and in other high risk States/ districts in March and April 2007. Mop up rounds have been implemented in the areas with recent reporting of polio cases like Andhra Pradesh & Maharashtra on 18th of March 2007 using mOPV1.

» One additional immunization round has been implemented in 17th endemic districts of Bihar on 8th April 2007

» mOPV1 is being used in endemic States/districts during the SIAs

» In order to control Type 3 virus circulation, mOPV3 were used in 4 Western UP districts during March SNID

» The SNID in May 2007 will be implemented in UP and Bihar other venerable States

Increased programmatic focus has been given to the endemic States like UP and Bihar for ensuring highest quality of Supplementary Immunization Activity (SIAs) like:

» Increasing government ownership through better involvement of State and District administrative machinery

» Deploying high level officials from UP and Bihar to monitor PPI activities

» Increased focus on mechanisms to reduce missed children in west UP

» Improving vaccination team performance by re-training vaccinators and supervisors to improve their interpersonal communication skills.

» Improving community participation by expanding the social mobilisation network by increased deployment of social mobilization coordinators in West UP districts

» Involving ASHA as member of vaccination team and she will also mobilize the missed children for vaccination during monthly Health day in the village

» Involvement of religious leaders, Panchayats and celebrities for community awareness and mobilization for vaccination.
