To spread awareness on infant care, the National Neonatology Forum (NNF) has announced newborn week celebrations Dec 15-21.
The NNF's thrust this year includes provision of newborn care at home and recognition of danger signs, transferring sick newborns from home to referral centres and caring for sick or low birth neonates.The NNF has evolved a project cooperation agreement with UNICEF to provide care packages in 10 districts in collaboration with the governments of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Assam.
The forum came into existence in 1980 through the initiative of a handful of leading paediatricians working in neonatology. It soon became a catalyst for advancing newborn health throughout India and helping to expand newborn care beyond the nurseries in hospitals. NNF celebrated its silver jubilee in 2005.
