The girl from Orissa, who was denied admission to a medical college here because she was stricken with polio and certified with 87 percent disability, has urged President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to intervene.
Susmita Haro, a topper in the Scheduled Tribe category of the state joint entrance examination, was denied admission to the VSS Medical College in Burla. The college insisted on examining her again despite the chief district medical officer R.C. Nanda's report that she had 65 percent disability.Nanda's certificate is well within the limits laid by the Supreme Court, which in a recent directive said a physically handicapped person could get admission in a medical college only if she or he had less than 70 percent disability.
"My career has been spoilt due to misleading reports regarding my disability percentage," Haro said in her letter to President Kalam.
"How can the percentage of the disability increased within such a short period of time?" she asked.
"I request you kindly to take proper step against irresponsible doctors so that I can get justice," Haro wrote.
