Drug Name : Chlordiazepoxide

Indication :


Chloradiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine drug used as a sedative. The test monitors the level of chlordiazepoxide in blood and determine its toxic level.

Physiology :


Chlordiazepoxide is an antianxiety agent commonly used in suicide attempts. It is slowly absorbed and may take several hours to reach a peak plasma level.

Normal Values :


0.1-3.0 µg/ml (0-10 µmol/L)

Critical Values :


>20 µg/ml (>77 µgmol/L)

Test Method :


High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC).

Interpretation :


Overdosage with the benzodiazepines is common but does not cause serious conditions.

Side effects :


Side effects include drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, blurred vision, skin rash and irregular menstrual periods. Since it is a habit forming drug, it may lead to addiction and hence should not be used more than the prescribed amount.
