Parasomnias - Myths about Sleepwalking

Myths about Sleepwalking

As with anything in life that is not clearly understood sleep walking has its share of myths and superstitions surrounding it.

It is generally believed that there is a risk of violence if a sleepwalker is awakened. This is simply not true; somnambulists will often be confused or disoriented when awakened, so it is best not to wake them. Instead, it will be better to talk to them gently and persuade them to return to bed without waking them.

Another popular legend holds that somnambulists cannot fall or injure themselves while sleepwalking. This, again, is not true. Falls and injuries are common occurrences during sleepwalking.
