New 'superbug' MRSA Found in Livestock

A new strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) 'superbug' has been found in cows milk in UK by researchers at Cambridge University. Experts insist there is no overall threat to the safety of milk sold in shops because any kind of MRSA in dairy products is destroyed by the heat used in the process of pasteurization.

According to environmental experts the new MRSA strain has emerged due to over-use of antibiotics by dairy farmers. The Soil Association has called for a complete ban on routine use of antibiotics in livestock because of fears they may promote drug-resistant bacteria.

Scientists Find New Way to Battle Antibiotic-Resistant Superbugs
A new study has shown that treating municipal wastewater solids at higher temperatures could be an effective tool in the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Subsequent research suggested that the strain was also found in humans. Scientists feel the need for further research to ascertain if humans were spreading the bug to cows or vice versa.
