Royal Shrewsbury hospital, which enables care for people in North Shropshire and Wales and funded by the local health board, will now offer the cancer drug Herceptin, free to the Welsh breast cancer patients.

The costs for this medicine estimated at £47,000, will have to be borne by the other cancer sufferers who are not from Wales. With effect from February, all Welsh local Health boards will be sponsoring the drug for women who are in dire need of the medicine to fight against cancer.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire and Staffordshire Strategic Health Authority said: "The routine use of Herceptin will be introduced when and if Nice guidance is published. But a clinician may ask a PCT to approve the use of Herceptin in exceptional personal circumstances."
