GlaxoSmithKline said that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved asthma Flovent HFA for kids ages 4 to 11.

Flovent HFA is a reformulation of Flovent that uses the more environmentally friendly hydrofluoroalkane instead of chlorofluorocarbon to propel the medication out of the canister.

It is an inhaled corticosteroid that prevent airway blockage due to inflammation due to asthma.

The medication initially was approved by the FDA in 2004 for patients above 12 years of age.

Then researchers conducted a trail which showed that children 4 to 11 years of age with persistent asthma were benefited on receiving the drug over a 12-week period.

The study expected the participants (children) to take Flovent HFA twice daily.

When the kids taking the drug were compared with those taking a placebo it was found that children who took Flovent HFA experienced improved peak expiratory flow, reduced use of albuterol and reduced nighttime awakenings due to asthma.
