Increased Risk of Eye Disease in Obese

Researchers have found that obese people are in increased risk of developing eye problems. A review of study conducted by Professor Michael Belkin and Zohar Habot-Wilner , Goldschleger Eye Institute, Israel, have compiled data from more than 20 reviews and found that risk of developing eye problems are increased in obese people. Earlier studies have proved the link between obesity and other chronic diseases and cancers. The researchers have found that obese people have high risk of developing four important eye problems such as Age related muscular dystrophy (AMD), Glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

AMD causes progressive muscle weakness in the muscles, which controls the eyes leading to drooping eyelids. Glaucoma causes vision loss by damaging the optic nerve, glaucoma does not produce any early symptoms making it hard to treat. Cataract causes clouded vision due to clouding of the eye lens leading to difficulty in vision. Diabetic retinopathy occurs due to complication of diabetes, which occurs due to damage to the blood vessels of the retina leading to vision loss.
