European Union Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has said that some 60 million people will need the swine flu vaccine in the region.

Speaking to Portuguese news agency Lusa, he said that the number was the best estimate according to the EU's executive arm. EU health ministers are due to meet in Brussels in October to chart out a course to adopt vaccination against swine flu in the region.

It is estimated that some 500 million people live in the EU member countries and fears are that not everyone can get a vaccine. Latest figures indicate there are 94,512 laboratory-confirmed cases of swine flu in 136 countries across the world and that 429 people have died as a result of this infection.
