Electroshocks for the Severely Depressed to be Banned in India
Electric shocks or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been in use since the 1940’s as a last resort for the severely depressed who do not respond to other forms of therapy. ECT is likely to be banned in India soon.
The Union Health Ministry has held discussions with  doctors, administrators and state administrators concerned with the District Mental Health Programme about the proposed changes to the Mental Health Care Bill, 2010.

Psychiatrists are of the opinion that even though the Health Ministry has proposed a ban on ECT, it should be allowed under anesthesia in special cases, where it can save lives.
