In yet another Herceptin refusal case in the UK, a 10-year-old girl whose mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer is seeking the help from her MP in order to ensure that her mother gets the requisite treatment. Katie Morgan's mother, Susan wants to be treated with Herceptin, but Shropshire Primary Care Trust has not obliged saying that the drug has not been approved.
Owen Paterson, the MP of the region has received the letter written by Kate requesting the drug on behalf of her two sisters and baby brother. Kate has written that she wants her mum to be around when she grows up. 'Please help us, we want our mum to be here when we grow up,' the letter pleads. Paterson, said the £47,000 course of drugs was generally available in Wales and there was no reason why this request should be refused. He added that everybody paid the same taxes and were entitled to receive equal health benefits. 'There are trials which show it has worked,' he said of Herceptin. Shropshire County PCT said that it would be bound to give the drug if it were approved by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), adding that there were questions of the efficacy of the drug in early breast cancer. However, it said that people who felt that they were special cases could write to it and request the drug.
