Aortic Valve Replacement for Aortic Valve Stenosis
Aortic Valve Replacement for Aortic Stenosis
Aortic valve replacement is the only proven effective therapy for aortic stenosis. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided.Medical and surgical modalities are available for the treatment of aortic stenosis.
Medical management
- Strenuous physical activity should be avoided by patients diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis even if they do not have any symptoms.
- Avoid dehydration and hypovolemia.
- Drugs used for the treatment of hypertension or coronary artery diseases (CAD) are generally safe. These include beta blockers and ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitors). Nitroglycerin is helpful to treat chest pain (angina). The role of statin medications are still being studied.
Aortic valve replacement is the only proven effective therapy for aortic stenosis. Survival rates are almost near to normal after the damaged valve is replaced.
- Percutaneous Balloon Aortic Valvuloplasty is a technique preferable to operation in children and young adults with congenital, noncalcific aortic stenosis.
