MCI Plans to Introduce a New MMed Course After Completing MBBS

The Medical Council of India (MCI) is planning to introduce a new 2year MMed course, which the MBBS graduates are expected to undergo before they opt for higher education or begin practicing. But this has drawn some kind of criticism from medical teachers as the MCI is only lengthening the process of creating doctors by introducing such reforms.

Teachers also raised concerns about the significance of the MMed course for paraclinical subjects like anatomy, physiology and pharmacology because generally these students take up teaching as their profession. Currently in India we need doctors to serve as general physicians or in villages but after spending two more years in a medical school not many doctors will be open to the idea of serving in villages.

An MCI official said the idea behind introducing this course is to create quality doctors.
