The updated recommendations on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that support a two-dose schedule for boys and girls who initiate vaccines between the age of 9 -14, has been recently endorsed by the American Cancer Society.

The recommendations were updated after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the slimmed-down schedule in October 2016.

‘The American Cancer Society has endorsed the two-dose regimen for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.’

Reviewing Data from Clinical Trials
The American Cancer Society has reviewed data from several clinical trials and found that two dose regimen of HPV vaccine in boys and girls around the age of 9-14 were found to be protected.

The updated recommendations from ACIP include:

Debbie Saslow, Ph.D, Senior Director, HPV-Related and Women's Cancers for the American Cancer Society, said, "In the past several years, studies have shown the vaccine is even more effective than expected."

"This new two-dose regimen is easier to follow, and we now know is very effective in preventing HPV, which is linked to a half dozen types of cancer."

Inspite of the safety and efficacy of HPV vaccines, the US vaccination rate is very low when compared to other countries.

Only 28% of boys and 42% of girls between the age of 13 to 17 years were found to receive the recommended three-dose in 2015.

HPV infection is also linked to vaginal, vulvar, oropharyngeal, anal, and penile cancers apart from cervical cancer.
