First Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery Performed In Mangaluru, India

A J Hospital & Research Center in Mangaluru, performed the first minimal invasive heart surgery.

Chandrakanth, 55, who was diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease, severe mitral stenosis in Atrial Fibrillation was advised to undergo Mitral Valve Replacement surgery in 2007. However, he had postponed surgery in view of sternal incision.

He had decided to undergo open heart surgery and consulted Dr. Jayashankar Marla, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at A J Hospital & Research Centre. Through a small incision in the chest from the right side Chandrakanth was offered minimally invasive surgery. Subsequently, he underwent successful mitral valve repair with left atrial appendage ligation and modified maze procedure through minimal invasive approach from right side of chest. Heart lung machine was connected through small incision in the right thigh. Post surgery, his recovery was quick and he had uneventful short hospital stay.

The surgery was performed by the team of doctors headed by Dr. Marla, Dr. Madhav Kamath, Dr. Gourav Shetty, all consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Dr. Gururaj Tanthry, Chief Cardiac Anesthesiologist and Dr. Trevor Sequeira, Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and support staff.
