Why is Conivaptan Prescribed? (Indications)


This medication is an arginine vasopressin receptor antagonist, prescribed for hyponatremia (low blood sodium level).

When should Conivaptan not to be taken? (Contraindications)


Contraindicated in patients with anuria (absence of urination), severe kidney problems who are taking CYP3A inhibitors, electrolyte disturbances, and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Conivaptan?


Adults- Euvolemic or Hypervolemic Hyponatremia: IV- Initially, 20 mg as a loading dose over 30 minutes, followed by continuous infusion of 20 mg over 24 hours for 2-4 days.

How should Conivaptan be taken?


It comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.

What are the warnings and precautions for Conivaptan?

* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart failure, liver, or kidney problems, alcoholism, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.
* It may affect blood sugar level; monitor sugar level regularly while taking this medication.

What are the side effects of Conivaptan?

Blood - Anemia.
Heart - Abnormal heart rhythm and high/low blood pressure.
Gastrointestinal - Constipation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
General - Swelling in the extremities, injection site reactions such as redness, pain, inflammation, fever and thirst.
Infections - Pneumonia and urinary tract infection.
Metabolic - Decrease in blood minerals.
Central Nervous system - Headache, confusion and sleeplessness.
Respiratory - Throat pain.
Skin - Itching.
