Why is BCG live - Bacillus Calmette- Guerin Prescribed? (Indications)
This vaccine is prescribed to prevent tuberculosis and treat bladder cancer.
Update:
1.There is no evidence that the vaccine protects subjects against infection with the COVID-19 virus, according to the WHO. But, it continues to recommend neonatal BCG vaccination in countries or settings with a high incidence of tuberculosis.
2.Randomized controlled trials are going on in Netherlands and Australia to assess whether BCG-Danish reduces the incidence and severity of COVID-19 among health-care professionals. (NCT04327206, NCT04328441)
3.Warm climate and BCG vaccine (already given to all Indians) also may offer partial immunity, say health experts from UPMC Shadyside Pennsylvania, the US.
When should BCG live - Bacillus Calmette- Guerin not to be taken? (Contraindications)
Contraindicated in patients with AIDS/HIV, who are under cancer therapy, sepsis, urinary tract infection and hypersensitivity.
What is the dosage of BCG live - Bacillus Calmette- Guerin ?
IM- For Newborns- The recommended dose is 0.05ml.
Adults and children- the recommended dose is 0.1ml.

It comes as a powder for injection (diluted with fluid), to be administered by a healthcare provider into the large muscle.
What are the warnings and precautions for BCG live - Bacillus Calmette- Guerin ?
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of recent smallpox vaccination, immune disorder, cancer, fever, infection, severe burns, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.* Avoid contact with people who have infection.
* Avoid pregnancy while taking this medication.
What are the side effects of BCG live - Bacillus Calmette- Guerin ?
Genitourinary - Painful urination, urinary frequency, urinary incontinence, blood in urine, bladder inflammation, nighttime urination and urinary tract infection.Gastrointestinal - Stomach upset, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
Respiratory - Wheezing and difficulty in breathing.
Miscellaneous - Joint/muscle pain, headache, dizziness, flu-like syndrome, weight loss, uneasiness, fever and chills.
