New Kidney Transplantation procedure

by Medindia Content Team on Dec 14 2004 10:56 AM

A transplantation procedure that will most likely help patients with renal failure to receive kidneys from unmatched donors has been implemented by a team of Chennai doctors.

The procedure which is called , `Splenic Radiation and Plasmapheresis,' enables patients with renal failure to accept kidneys from donors whose blood group does not match. "Through this technique we temporarily blind the function of the spleen that otherwise rejects the kidney from a high risk donor," P. Ravichandran, head, Nephrology and Transplantation, Kidney Disease and Institute of Organ Transplantation, and a member of the team, said at a press conference in Chennai.
