Medical Miracle! 18-Year Old With His Heart Outside of His Body Leads a Normal Life

Arpit Gohil was born in Gujarat with a rare condition that left his heart outside of his rib cage. His heart is only separated from the outside of his body by a thin layer of skin with no protection on his rib cage.

Doctors told his family that he will not live long and should not expect him to live beyond infancy. But now doctors call him a medical miracle, saying that even a slight bump could kill him.

Parents of Children With Congenital Heart Disease Needs Better Information
Physicians delivering the diagnosis need to do a better job of showing compassion, ensuring parents understand all their options and providing easily understandable information, based on a survey of parents of children with congenital heart disease.

The condition is known as Pentalogy of Cantrell. It is a congenital disorder that causes vital internal organs to form outside of the body. The severity of the condition varies, but in particularly it can cause ectopia cordis, where the heart is completely or partially outside of the thoracic cavity.

"I can do everything like a normal person and don’t have any trouble with my jobs on the farm," he said.

Arpit works with his father in the farms and plays cricket with his friends. About 156 such cases have been reported from across the world, so far.
