Michael Matts, who claimed to have cancer so he could stay in the limelight, was jailed for 1 year for the series of deceptions and frauds. The 34-year-old, who is a self-confessed fan of Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, even persuaded his fiancée to prepone their wedding due to this disease.

Matts is now divorced from his 30-year-old wife Emma, with whom he has two children.

"He's a conniving cheating liar and a sick fantasist. He's put my family through hell," said Emma's father John Heighton.

Matts apparently hero-worshipped Armstrong, who successfully beat cancer, Leicester Crown Court heard. He joined Leicestershire Police in 2001 and told colleagues Armstrong was his inspiration.

"You don't doubt people until you have a reason to, but virtually everything he told us was a sham. At his wedding he even fooled my wife, who's a nurse," Mr Heighton told the Daily Telegraph newspaper. "They were married for five years and have two small children, now aged one-and-a-half years and three. When he was arrested our daughter arrived home to see the police there and initially feared they were going to break the news he'd died from his illness."
