George McCovery weighed 345 pounds when he was jailed for driving on a suspended license. Judge Donna Miller handed him a one month jail sentence but added that she was willing to reduce his sentence by one day for every pound he lost. When the judge checked on McCovery after 20 days, she found that he had lost 25 pounds and she immediately released him from prison.

Miller, who is famous for her unusual caveats when handing out sentences, said that she was surprised that McCovery was able to lose so much weight. It's not easy to lose weight. I thought he'd lose 5, maybe, 6 pounds not 25. I do what I do to try to change the person in front of me, Miller said but added that her self improvement sentences were not for everyone.
