Woman’s Degree of Sexual Freedom

by Medindia Content Team on Apr 1 2006 6:58 PM

According to the study conducted by psychologists from Sheffield University most women still believe one-night stands are immoral. The study of women's attitudes towards sex revealed that women of all ages believe that sex outside marriage or a committed relationship is wrong.

The women community despite achieving liberation still feels that those who have one-night stands do so out of desperation or drunkenness. The research which was followed by a survey found that many people believe that rape victim who had lots of sexual partners is at least partly responsible for her predicament. Researcher Dr Sharon Hinchliff asked 46 women aged 20 to 83 about their views on sex. About 90% thought casual sex was wrong and only 10 % admitted having a one night stand. Dr Hinchliff said that women felt that they have a strong reason for their one night stands like desperation, needing attention, wanting love, or they were drunk and out of control.

Speaking at the British Psychological Society's annual conference in Cardiff, Dr Hinchliff said that women engaging in casual sex were seen as copying men. However, most believed that true fulfillment can be found only in a loving and having a committed relationship. He said that women had their sexual freedom from the Sixties but the question is that of the degree of sexual freedom.
