Bangkok: During the introduction of a UN AIDS report, UN officials were prompted to outline the causes of the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in Myanmar and Vietnam , which is inadequate prevention measures and accessibility to treatment.
Even Thailand, which was originally a HIV/AIDS haven, has shown remarkable decline in rates of HIV, almost by 50%. But if the adopted measures to combat AIDS go slack, there is a risk of history being repeated.Patrick Brenny, the country coordinator of UNAIDS said "Thailand in a way has become a captive of its success. We don't have the magic cure yet. Our efforts are not a sprint. They're a marathon. There is still more that needs to be done."
The HIV/AIDS fight is gaining momentum in Asia, where it is estimated that some 8.3 million people were HIV-positive. Frika Chia of the Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS, said "When we are talking about gender inequality, the low status of women remains a driver of the disease's spread."
