Veggies Not a Priority Among Brits

by Rajshri on Apr 10 2010 8:31 PM

More and more Britons are eating fewer vegetables, a new report published in the magazine, Grocer reveals.

Even as the government spends millions on educating the public on the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, a survey carried out by Freshfel Europe revealed that vegetable consumption in Britain fell by 11 percent in 2008 though fruit consumption increased by 1 percent.

The UK government has spent approximately £3.3 million on popularizing the 5-a-day campaign in the last five years while it has also launched Change4Life and the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme.

According to the figures, the overall fruit consumption in Europe fell by 1 percent while vegetable consumption fell by 8 percent.

“It's disappointing to see further confirmation that we continue to fail as a nation to enjoy a healthy diet. The UK Government's five-a-day programme needs to put greater emphasis on eating fresh rather than suggesting that highly processed food can be an acceptable alternative for healthy eating”, Fresh Produce Consortium chief executive Nigel Jenney said.
