Just after intercourse, the woman suffered a stroke causing weakness on her left side as well as slurred speech. Doctors at the Loyola University Medical Center had to inject the clot-busting drug tPA as she arrived at the hospital six hours after the stroke. tPA needs to be administered within 3 hours after a stroke.
The women recovered within hours and within 12 hours the symptoms were almost fully gone. The stroke may have been caused by birth control pills, a venous blood clot, sexual intercourse and a heart defect, doctors said.
The details of the case are published in the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease.
