Following reports of bacterial contamination of fluid filled plastic teething ring, manufactured by The First Years, a unit of RC2 Corp., parents have been urged by the Food and Drug Administration to stop providing their babies with the product.
The contaminated liquid if swallowed or absorbed through a cut in the oral cavity, could lead to sickness. Malnourished infants, infants with compromised immune function or other health disorders are at an increased risk of contracting infection.Previous month, over 350, 000 teething rings were recalled by the company based at Massachusetts owing to the contamination. Other products produced by the company are also being inspected for quality, said Dr. Daniel Schultz, Director, Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
The contaminated product was sold in parts of United States and Canada between July 2005 and January 2006. Retail shops, grocery stores, drug and specialty stores were involved in the distribution and sales of teething rings.
Approximately, 105 fluid leakage complaints and two instances of infants biting through the rings have been received so far. Anxious parents can log in to the Company’s website to elicit further details.
