Calgary Health Authorities Apologize to Woman over Miscarriage

The Calgary Health Region has apologized to a woman who had a miscarriage in a packed emergency room and was denied a private place to go through the process.

On Tuesday Health region CEO Jack Davis said, "On behalf of the region, we are sorry that this situation occurred and we empathize with this patient and her family."

"We are reviewing the circumstances of this case, as we do with all patient’s complaints, as part of our patient concerns process."

On Monday, 26-year-old Erin Wilson recounted the loss of her first child while waiting in the emergency room at the Peter Lougheed Centre.

According to Wilson, from Strathmore, Alta., although she begged for help she was told by several nurses she'd have to wait to see a doctor.

Davis's apology follows less than two months after the CHR apologized to another Calgary family who also miscarried in a busy waiting room at the same hospital in July.

With the most recent complaint, the health region has announced the hiring of social workers to work in the emergency rooms of the entire city's hospital.

In addition the CHR, in an effort to improve services has also dedicated a 24-hour phone line for the public to call to provide input on how the region could improve its service.
