What is Barlow Syndrome ?  

Condition in which the leaflets of the mitral valve bulge to the left atrium of the heart, when the valve has to close with ventricular contraction. Due to incomplete closure of the valve, blood can leak back to the left ventricle (regurgitation).


Cause(s) :  
  • Degeneration of tissues of the leaflets of mitral valve
Symptoms :  
  • Irregular Heart Beat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Chest Pain that is not angina
  • Panic attacks and palpitations
  • Low blood pressure in lying position
  • In severe cases:
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Rarely cardiac arrest and sudden death
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Sounds of click and murmur heard when examined
  • Echocardiogram (2D Echo)
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Chest X-ray
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Angiogram
