Asperger's Syndrome may be a milder form of Autism.
The symptoms vary between children and is dependant on the environmental conditions of the child, the triggers and stressors as well as the level of support available to the child.
Age of presentation: Aspergers syndrome generally becomes apparent during the preschool years when the child begins to interact with other children.
Autism and Aspergers Syndrome: Researchers believe it is a milder form of Autism, where patients fail to pick up verbal and non verbal cues in social interactions. As opposed to autism, victims of Aspergers do not lag behind in cognitive skills, language development or basic intelligence.
Little Professors: Oddly enough, they demonstrate an uncanny interest with uniquely 'different' topics. Unable to appreciate the nuances of speaker - listener communication, these 'little professors', as they are fondly called, can wax eloquent on their pet topics, irrespective of the listener's response. This lack of empathetic communication creates a setback in their peer relationships and social interactions.
Suspect this condition if you find the following attributes in a person -
- Intelligence - usually average or above average
- Poor conversational skills
- Lacking control of emotions such as anger, depression and anxiety
- Unable to think in abstract ways
- No empathy with friends or family
- Likes to follow a set routine
- Has unusal areas of special interest in which they may excel
