How much or How Little?

Medically Reviewed by Dr. Sunil Shroff, MBBS, MS, FRCS (UK), D. Urol (Lond) on Feb 01, 2016

How much or How Little?

A glass of red wine a day for women, and two for men, appears to be good enough and reduces the risk of heart disease at middle age by 30 to 50%.

There is 1.5 to 3 mg of Resveratrol per liter of red wine. In the experiment, mentioned earlier, the mice were fed with 24mg /kg of their body weight. Therefore a human should consume 1000 glasses of red wine, on an average, to meet daily requirements, which is simply not feasible.

In some western countries, Resveratrol capsules are available over the counter. To gain effectively from this performance-enhancing drug, humans need to be as responsive to it as the rodents. The benefit of Resveratrol to humans is yet to be proven conclusively and its production is not governed by the FDA.
