Medically Reviewed by The Medindia Medical Review Team on Jan 18, 2018

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which doctor should I go to if I want to undergo a medical abortion?

You should go to a gynecologist for a medical abortion. You should also ensure that your doctor has access to a surgical center if surgery is required in case of complications following the medications.

2. Can I take pills for a medical abortion at home without visiting a doctor?

Abortion pills should not be taken without medical supervision, since complications could occur and a surgical procedure may be required if everything does not go as planned.

3. How many times will I be required to see the doctor?

You will need to visit the doctor a minimum of 2 to 3 times. The first time, the doctor will conduct an examination and occasionally some tests, and will administer one tablet. After a couple of days, you will have to revisit for your second medication (this is sometimes given to take at home). A third visit will be required around a couple of weeks later to confirm that complete abortion has taken place. Additional visits will be required in case of complications.

4. What precautions are required before you undergo medical abortion?

Before you undergo a medical abortion, you will have to undergo a physical examination to ensure that your pregnancy is within the date when medical abortion is permitted. The medical examination will also rule out conditions like heart disease, severe anemia and high blood pressure where medical abortion should be avoided. An ultrasound may sometimes be required to confirm the pregnancy duration and to rule out conditions like ectopic pregnancy or the presence of a mass in the uterus, which contraindicate the use of medical abortion.

5. Do abortion pills affect future pregnancies?

Abortion pills usually do not affect future pregnancies, unless of course, they are associated with major complications. Women should be encouraged to use a contraceptive method following an abortion if they do not want pregnancies in the immediate future so that they can avoid repeated abortions, which can endanger the life of the woman.

6. What is the difference between emergency contraception pills and abortion pills?

Emergency contraception pills or morning after pills contain progesterone and are taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. They are available over the counter and can be used without consulting a gynecologist. They are used more as a precaution to prevent pregnancy. On the other hand, abortion pills are used once the pregnancy is confirmed. These have to be taken under the supervision of a doctor.
