Glossary

Acne: Also known as pimples, it is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles are blocked by oil or dead skin cells.

Cherry angiomas: Also known as Campbell De Morgan spots or senile angiomas, these are harmless or benign cherry-red papules on the skin.

Chickenpox: Also called varicella, it is a highly contagious viral infection, which causes itchy, blister-like rashes on the skin.

Cold sores: Also called herpes labialis, it is an infection caused by the Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) around the border of the lips.

Crow's feet: A branching wrinkle at the outer corner of the eyes.

Fever blister: An infection surrounding the mouth caused by the Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1).


Linear epidermal nevi: These are abnormal, noncancerous (benign) patches of skin caused by an overgrowth of cells in the epidermis.


Liver spots: Also called solar lentigo, these are flat tan, brown or black spots on the skin common with age.

Poikiloderma: A skin condition exhibiting areas of hyper- and hypopigmentation, telangiectasias and atrophy.

Rosacea: Also known as acne rosacea, it is a skin condition that causes small, red, pus-filled bumps on the face.

Scab: A protective crust of tissue covering that forms after the skin is damaged.

SPF 30: Abbreviation for sun protection factor. A SPF 30 sunscreen provides 30 times the protection compared to no sunscreen.

Spider veins: These are small, twisted veins visible on the skin surface of the legs or face, which may be red, blue or purple in color.

Warts: Also known as verruca vulgaris, these are small, fleshy bumps on the skin or mucus membrane caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).
