Zofran may Harm Developing Fetus If Taken During Pregnancy

by Kathy Jones on February 28, 2013 at 6:58 PM

A large study conducted in Denmark has found no evidence that popular anti-nausea drug Zofran will harm babies if taken during pregnancy.

Around 10 percent of expectant mothers suffer from morning sickness, including nausea and vomiting, which requires prescription medicine.

Zofran is a popular anti-nausea drug that is often recommended for such women though a study recent suggested that it increased the risk of babies being born with cleft palate if taken by pregnant women.

However a Danish Medical Research Council funded study looked at more than 600,000 did not find any evidence that the drug increases the risk of a major birth defect. Around 1,970 women of the 608,385 pregnancies analyzed by the study took Zofran. The study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
