Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Diabetes

by Kathy Jones on July 26, 2011 at 7:54 PM

While it is well known that vitamin D deficiency can lead to skin cancer, a new study conducted by Australian researchers suggests that it could also increase the risk of diabetes.

More than 5,200 people took part in the study that was led by Ken Sikaris from Melbourne Pathology.

The researchers conducted blood tests on the participants and found that an increase of 25 nanomoles of vitamin D per litre of blood (nmol/L) led to a 24 percent reduction in the risk of diabetes.

Writing in the report that has been published in the journal Diabetes Care, Dr Sikaris said that the research could prove to be a major help in Australian government's attempt to reduce the high instance of diabetes in the country.
