US Birth Rate Plummets to Record Low

by Bidita Debnath on December 3, 2012 at 1:09 PM

Due to the decline in child-bearing among foreign-born women, the US birth rate hit a record low last year, a new study has found.

According to the Pew Study, the overall US birth rate decreased by eight percent between 2007 and 2010, and by six percent among US-born women.

The data found that the rate fell sharpest for those hardest hit by the recession, 14 percent among foreign-born women, and 23 percent among Mexican immigrant women in particular.

According to the BBC, the 2011 rate was the lowest since 1920, when such records began.

Foreign and US-born Hispanic women have experienced the largest fall in household wealth since 2007, the report said.

According to the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, but increased access to contraception for Latino women may also be playing a part in the falling birth rate, the report added.
