Tuna Sandwiches in School Lunches, Cause of Concern

by Savitha C Muppala on September 21, 2012 at 10:31 AM

Tuna fish sandwiches at school lunches have been found to contain unsafe levels of mercury, according to a recent study.

School officials and parents have been advised to restrict consumption of light tuna to twice a month and not serve any albacore tuna to children, after investigation found triple the amount of mercury in albacore compared to light tuna variety.

This study is perhaps the first of its kind to examine mercury levels in school lunches.

The developing brain of children can suffer serious damage due to exposure to mercury, which is a neurotoxin.

The focus should be on providing nutritional alternatives to children who are used to consuming tuna sandwiches regularly.
