Toxic Chemical C8 and Menopause

by Savitha C Muppala on March 24, 2011 at 11:20 PM

A West Virginia University study has pointed out that women who are exposed to elevated levels of the toxic chemical C8, would in all likelihood have experienced menopause. There is now proof to suggest that the presence of C8 can hamper the body's hormone system.

The study was able to find a relation between chemicals called perfluorocarbons, or PFCs, in women's blood and the beginning of menopause. Higher levels of these chemicals trigger lower levels of estrogen, scientists found.

Sarah Knox, lead author of the study and a professor at the WVU School of Medicine's Department of Community Medicine, said, "I think this is major. It shows that early menopause is associated with PFC exposure."
