As the world celebrates the 120th anniversary of the discovery of the X-Rays by W.C.Roentgen, the Kerala chapter of Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) has called for a cautious approach in pediatric imaging.

German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen discovered the X-ray and his discovery has helped revolutionize medicine and save countless lives. Nowhere has that impact been greater than in the care of children.

‘While most of us will go about business as usual today, it seems appropriate that we pause to recognize the radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, technologists and administrators who continue to make such a difference in the lives of so many children.’

President of the Kerala Chapter, S. Pradeep said this topic was the main focus while they celebrated the fourth International Day of Radiology to mark the 120th anniversary.

The event organized by the city chapter of IRIA in association with the Department of Radiology and Imaging of RCC and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), had a special session on Pediatric imaging.

IRIA initiated this radiology day celebration to bring in more public attention to this area of medical science. Experts also spoke on the need for keeping the radiation dose as low as possible when children undergo scans.

Today, 44 percent of children diagnosed with cancer are treated with radiation therapy, helping to save countless lives. It is no coincidence that survival for many childhood cancers, and other diseases and injuries, has dramatically improved over the last few decades as use of these technologies has increased.
