Thanksgiving Lethargy Not Linked to Turkey Alone

by Kathy Jones on November 25, 2011 at 8:49 PM

Contrary to popular perception, the chemical tryptophan in the turkey is not the exclusive cause of the after-Thanksgiving Day meal lethargy experienced by most people.

In fact tryptophan also can be found in eggs, cheese, fish and nuts, but we do not experience the same sleepy feeling after consuming these food items. Scott Beyer, professor of animal sciences at Kansas State University told LJworld.com that the lethargy is actually linked to the high amount of calories consumed at the Thanksgiving Day meal.

The best way to avoid this lethargy is to cut down on the volume of food consumed and also ensure that you eat desserts in moderation. Additionally, a quick walk and doing some house work may help keep you awake!
