Suspected Contaminated Hospital Drip Results in Second Baby Death

Health officials revealed that a second baby who was fed with contaminated hospital drip has died, though they revealed that the death was not caused by infection.

Officials at Public Health England said that so far 22 babies are undergoing treatment in neo-natal intensive care units across Britain for septicaemia, a case of blood poisoning, after being fed by infected hospital drips. Manufactured by ITH Pharma, the drip called total parental nutrition (TPN), is suspected to be infected by Bacillus cereus.

The infected drip so far has been linked with the death of one baby, nine-day old Yousef Al-Kharboush who died at St Thomas' Hospital in London on June 1 after contracting the infection. The second death as in St Thomas' Hospital as well but it is believed that the baby died due to other causes and not due to the infected drip.

"We can confirm that a baby involved in the investigation has sadly died, but it is not believed to be related to the infection. The baby was clear of the infection at the time of death", a spokesperson for Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust said.
