Researchers Working on 3-D Skin Image Processing

Researchers at University of Manchester and University of Liverpool are attempting to develop a form of synthetic skin that can be easily formed on a 3D printer.

The researchers said that the synthetic skin produced will be matched to a person's age, gender and ethnic group.

The researchers are currently developing new 3D image processing and skin modeling techniques so that the skin will appear natural in whatever light it is shown. The first step will be developing a 3D camera technology so that an individual's skin tone and skin texture under varying light sources in the subsequent image processing.

"The human visual system is extremely sensitive to small distortions in skin appearance, so making a convincing synthetic version will be essential whether this technology is used for emergency or cosmetic medicine", Dr Sophie Wuerger from the Perception Group in the University's Institute of Psychology, Health and Society said.
