Recent Law Simplifies Rules on Sperm Donation

by Savitha C Muppala on December 31, 2012 at 6:21 PM

Thanks to a recent legislation put forth by Nancy Skinner of Berkeley, life will be easier for California couples to conceive with a donor. Same-sex couples will now be permitted to conceive at home without the necessity for lab tests.

The new law will seek to loosen up the restrictions placed by the US Food and Drug Administration. According to the FDA's rules, only a would-be donor can give sperm to someone who is their "intimate sexual partner."

This is a disadvantage for same-sex couples as it means that donor's are required to freeze and isolate sperm during the testing period in order to protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

These rules are so strict that they prevent people from becoming pregnant. The California law makes it more clear giving more clarity to the definition of whose sperm can be used to conceive at home.
