The functioning of OPDs and emergency wing of the state-run Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) here continued to suffer for the second day on Saturday as a section of medical staff pressed on with their strike.

The resident doctors, including postgraduate students, stopped working on Friday evening to protest the action taken against a colleague after the death of a woman and her newborn child.

"Talks are on with the striking doctors to settle the issue amicably," PGIMS officiating director K.B. Gupta said.

"We are trying to convince them to end the strike, keeping the interest of patients in mind," he said.

Official sources said senior residents were deployed in emergency and outpatient departments (OPDs).

Citing personal reasons, Gupta has already put in his papers and requested the authorities to relieve him of his charge.

The family of the deceased alleged that she and her newborn child died due to the negligence of doctors in the gynecology department.

However, the striking doctors maintained the woman from Jind town died not due to negligence but due to her critical condition. She had delivered a stillborn baby, they said.

Meanwhile, police has lodged a first information report (FIR) on the complaint of the bereaved family and initiated an inquiry.
