Obesity Surgery and Risk of Alcohol Abuse

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that people who underwent surgery for weight loss were twice more likely to abuse alcohol compared to those who did not have the surgery.

The study was conducted by researchers from University of Pittsburgh and was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in San Diego. The researchers followed more than 2,000 people who had undergone weight loss surgeries, including gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding.

The participants were asked about their drinking habits before and one or two years after the surgery and the researchers found that while 7.6 percent of the participants had drinking problems before the surgery, the number rose to 9.6 percent two years after the surgery.
