Number of Dengue Cases Reported in Delhi Jumps to 119, Highest in Last 5 Years

Delhi already holds the record for maximum dengue deaths in the country. Recent death of a 3-year old at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and another 10-year-old has increased the death toll to two.

The total number of cases reported in the Capital till August 8 has jumped to 119, a rise of nearly 125% over the last week. The number is also the highest in the last five years.

"The boy was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on July 2 and died on July 10. The death notification was given on July 16. ELISA test was found positive in this case," said a senior SDMC official.

A 10-year-old Manipuri native from South Delhi had died after a week of high fever, becoming the first suspected victim of the vector-borne disease. But municipal corporations did not take it as the disease as ELISA test was not conducted on her.

According to a municipal report on vector-borne diseases released till July 31, the total number of cases was 53, while the first week of August saw 66 cases. The number of cases from January 1 to August 8 for the last four years adds up to 23 in 2014, 41 in 2013, 10 in 2012, and 38 in 2011.
